Career Counseling- What is it?

By: Dani Hernandez

My name is Dani, I’m a provider here with Worthwhile Therapy. I worked at one of the largest universities in the country as a career counselor for two years, and I wanted to spread the word about career counseling because I see how much the need has grown! Before we go any further, I want to answer an important question:

What is career counseling?

  • It’s a space where you can explore who you are, your skills, and your values in order to figure out what you want to do with your life when it comes to your career and life.
  • You can talk about your thoughts, feelings, ideas, and anxieties to try and figure out what things mean to you so you feel more confident in your decision-making
  • It blends action-oriented solution-focused techniques and career development with an understanding of mental health and wellness and the impact of relationships!

As a university employee, my focus was on seeing as many students as possible to help them reach their goals in 1-2 sessions. Now I am able to work with clients from all over Florida for longer periods of time if needed, and with a deeper focus and understanding of the other factors going on in their lives.

Career counseling may be a good fit for you if:

You feel like you’re stuck or unhappy at work
  • If you are experiencing difficulty getting out of bed, changes in your appetite, and struggling to find motivation to do the things you once enjoyed, that may be an indicator that something in your life needs to change
  • These symptoms can be indicators of burnout, which is a form of exhaustion from being overwhelmed for a prolonged period of time
You don’t know what direction you want to take with your career
  • Whether you have no clue where to start, or you thought you knew for your whole life then things changed, career counseling is a safe place to explore that world of indecision
  • Together, we’ll participate in conversations and activities that allow you to explore your values, interests, and skills and see what direction they lead you to.
You want to make a change but don’t know how
  • While many grow up thinking that career journeys are linear, many experience incredibly non-linear career journeys, and that is okay!
  • Whether you are rethinking aspects of your identity or just needing to adjust to your identity shifting because of a change in your work life, career counseling may be a good fit for you.

FAQ’s about career counseling

Is it covered by insurance?

Counseling with focus on how it impacts your work-life balance can be covered by insurance if it meets medical necessity; if you are experiencing life-altering distress due to career related concerns, or it is connected to a diagnosable medical condition, insurance may* cover your sessions.

What does it look like?
  • While it’ll specifically look different for everyone, generally, it’ll be a mix of discussing your career history, assessing your skills, interests, and values, and collaborating with a professional to make a plan to get you where you want to be in life.
  • You are the expert in your life; I’m just there to provide resources, be a safe space to talk about traumas and difficult conversations, and be present and hold space for you as you put the pieces together.
